BRAHM is appreciative of its many dedicated volunteers. From organizing and staffing events throughout the year to helping complete day-to-day tasks, volunteers have helped make the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum a success.

There are a variety of opportunities to volunteer at the Museum:

Reception Duties: This volunteer will need to be comfortable using a POS system, or have an interest to learn. Transactions are simple, usually taking money for admission and entering it into the register. Duties would also include answering incoming phone calls and taking messages when needed. Shifts are usually 2 hours, to help cover the desk while there is an event. In rare cases, we may need a volunteer to cover a full day at the reception desk. (All duties are taught in one training session, prior to day serving)

Greeter: The greeting position is a fun and social position in our volunteer program. Volunteers are usually needed for greeting during events. This role would help direct our visitors to where they need to go and give some information on the museum as they walk in the door. Some events may require handing out tickets or taking tickets. Overall, this volunteer will be the first person our guests see as they come into the museum, so a positive and bubbly person is best for this role.

Gallery Security: This position would entail monitoring the galleries during business hours to ensure the protection of the artwork. Duties would include walking through the galleries, and at times engaging with patrons either by answering questions or by reminding guests to not touch the artwork. Sociability and comfortability interacting with people are important components of this position. As the position would involve ensuring the safety of the artwork, integrity is important, and all potential candidates for Gallery Security would be reviewed with the same level of scrutiny as those who might be applying for staff positions at the museum.

Hospitality: Many of our events are small and intimate, and do not require the use of a catering company. In this instance, we like to have volunteers that love to cook! In most cases, we need volunteers to create an hors d'oeuvre for 20-50 people, depending on the event. If the event is a TAC Talk, Scholars & Scones, or Coffee with the Curator, the volunteer that prepared a dish is more than welcome to attend the event for free!

Exhibition Changeovers: This volunteer will assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibitions in the Museum galleries. This may include: removing existing hardware and vinyl from walls, painting the walls in the galleries, helping to hang hardware and artwork, and assisting the Exhibitions and Collections Director in any other projects needed for changeover. Each candidate interested in handling the artwork directly will also need to meet with the E&C Director, as well as the Volunteer Coordinator, to ensure they are a good fit for this position.
